Triggers are a type of microphone that records a very narrow clicky hit-sound that can be use to pretty much anything... For example, open / close a noisegates for a channel or the most common use, make a drumsampler play a sound on each hit.
It's not the actual trigger that makes the sounds, you know. You can take the acoustic kick channel, place a drumagog plugin or similar and use the acoustic sound to trigger a sampled sound.
It's a matter of mixing technique and how you use certain tools. There is not a single normal studio engineer that actually records for example a triggered D-Drum module in the studio and will be using that shit in the mix anyway.
You often records the acoustic drum sounds and soundreplace / blend that particular drum later on just to equal out the hits and make, for example the kicks sound more even etc....
In this case, there was trig-microphones attached to kicks and toms. The signal from the tom triggers was never used by Rutan. He was a little upset we had them on in the first place since they somewhat kills the natural tone in the toms when they are attached on the drum... The kickdrums are blended with soundreplacement.
Other than the kick drums, everything is recorded as it was.
