Ik heb de stoute kleren aangetrokken en Steve Lukather (Toto) gemaild:

Dus heb ik hem de volgende vragen gesteld:

"Hi Luke,

Well, that's how people know you around here (and a lot of other things
ofcourse, but I follow the forum)... but it was a very nice solo!

My (our) questions:

1. Let's start with Rosanna. You did a Dm-penta-thing. More or less a
D-aeolic-thing (F-scale). I don't know if you remember your solo (even you
listen to the radio once a while...?), but the thing is that you played the
Dm-penta with an As-tone (glide up to A on the b-string and a C#-tone glide
up to D on the E-string).

Did that come forth of your muscle-memorization (do you allways play penta's
with those diminished tones?). Or was that especially for the song?

2. Have you - like a lot of guitarstudents - done all the RealBook-stuff?
(You know those jazzstandards)?

3. When you prepare a song (like for a studio-session), do you know what
or how you will be soloing over that song, or do you let it depend on your
emotion at the time?

4. Have you got all the knowledge about the scales, including Melodic Minor
and Harmonic Minor? And do you know all the chords deriving from those
scales?

5. When somebody tells you that you have a (studio)-gig: how do you prepare?
Do you study the chords and progressions and do you have any idea about what
to do when the studio-master nods at you ("Now you're Luke!).

6. How do you interpret an song before you solo it?

7. If I asked you now, are you able to solo (on the spot) on a Esmaj7b5 or
any crazy chord like that?

8. Can you mention any thing that you would like to improve fot yourself?

Now we'd like to know any thing about your current projects.

9. How is life as a guitarplayer? What is it that you do right now? When do
we see you in Amsterdam again?

So, those were my questions. They come from the heart of the guitarplaying
wannabees in Holland. We like your sound and your music.

Maybe a last question about gear:

10. You've got a great sound. But you are surrounded by great gear. If
somebody had to spend about 1000 dollars for gear: what do you advice for
amp?

Luke, very much thanx!!! There's a lot of young talent in Europe. They all
want to know about great guitarplaying. Your answers to my questions will
certainly result in more quenstions, but that's what how it goes.

Hier volgen zijn antwoorden onder mijn vragen:

I think you assume that i would be thinking instead of just playing I
NEVER think in terms of a particular scale. I have been playing since
1964 and have studied when I was lsike 15-18 and then i was off workin
on the studios and touring. I still practice everyday and I am on the
nicholas Slomonsky book of scalse and modes just to have more options
but scales in of themsleves are boring an non musicla. I just play. I
guess it come naturally cause my brain doesnt work that fast. hahaha

I just let the tape roll and played. I got lucky I guess.

I have it and have messed with it but I am not doing those kind of
gigs. Never hsurst to learn all you can!

I NEVER got the tunes before a session. It was all flying by the seat
of your panbts and or reading a part or both. Sessions are definitly an
artform all unto itself. You either get it, feel comfortable and can
deal with the pressure or not. It felt natural and I used to enjoy the
challenges of all the different styles and artists I got to work with.
I hardlky ever do them anymore. No one does. No one has to play really
good anymore. Just get a pro tools rig. hahaha

Nah, scales are like working out in a gym. its good for you but it aint
music. Its math BUT it can insprite new things in your playing. Trail
and error is the key. Remember, there are NO wrong notes. You can
explain almost any wrong note away if you study be bop or jazz improv.
For guitar players we are always just one fret away. hahaha

5. When somebody tells you that you have a (studio)-gig: how do you
prepare? Do you study the chords and progressions and do you have any
idea about what to do when the studio-master nods at you ("Now you're
Luke!).

I just show up. They assume I know what I am doing based on reputation
and i assume they called ME for the right session. I mean I am not a
banjo player so.. well you get it. hahaha

I dont. i LISTEN and hear it in my head. Often I just run the tape and
it just happens. I dont think that hard about music man. If you do it
becoms wooden and mechanical.

Es ??? haha I dont know that one. BUt if you mean like a Bb sus over E
i can dig that. You cant just run scales of chords like this. i suggest
making a loop onm a tape recorder or compter recording device and just
repeating it ands fucking around with any notes that are possible and
make mistakes, find your own new licks. USE YOU EARS!


Now we'd like to know any thing about your current projects.

9. How is life as a guitarplayer? What is it that you do right now?
When do we see you in Amsterdam again?

I am very lucky and very blessed yo have this life. I get paid to play
the guitar, see the world, and work with the best players in the world
for over 30 years! A great fucking life and thanks to YOU all for
allowing me this great honor! TYou pay to come see me and the guys and
wiothout you i would be nothing!
I love Amsterdam, we are doing the ARROW fest 2nd on the bill to
Aerosmith and doing alot of cool stuff. We shall return soon.

Hmm, thats not much $$ but a good Marshall will always do it!

Vind het erg tof dat ie ook niet zo theoretisch ingesteld is, maar meer op gevoel. Daar ben ik het namelijk erg mee eens :cheerup:

Dat klinkt inderdaad heel erg rock n roll, maar check eens wat lesvideo's van hem, hij speelt de solo' s noot voor noot en legt precies uit wat hij doet.

Ik denk idd dat Luke niet zomaar wat doet. Hij doet zich in het interviewtje wat stoerder voor dan ie is. Over Rosanna pakt ie gewoon een D-mineur-penta. En dat doe je niet als je de boel maar de boel laat. Die d-penta zit in zijn spieren en hersenen.

Maar wat wel waar is, is dat hij een poppy / rocky gitarist is. Hij hoeft niet zoveel met jazz.
