I ‘replaced’ the Brunetti 059 that wasn´t my taste with a Diezel VH4 last Saturday. I have only had limited time with it at home and have not been able to really tweak it. I played it on Sunday for a couple of hours guitar straight in just to get familiar with the sound. On Monday I hooked up my fx and I programmed my midi-controller.
The first impression of the amp were that it has plenty of anything available, it can be tweaked to sound sterile and shrill but it can be a monstreous thunder of bass and gain and anything in between. The tone controls have a lot of useful sounds and you need to tweak carefully. At this time I have my bass on all channels around 10:00 and the mids and trebles are around 12:00 and it sounds VERY good that way. I immediately noticed how touch responsive the amp is. I also noticed that it has a lot of bass but once you start playing along a cd or jamtrack, it fits in perfectly.
So yesterday I had a rehearsal with my blues/rock-band and I took the Diezel with me so I could do a real life test and try it thru my Engl 4x12. My bandmates didn´t notice I had a new amp (I did not tell them) and I had some killer sounds going. I was playng my Fender Flame (hollowbody dual humbucker guitar) and got some very fat tones. The Flame tends to be a bit muddy on any amp but I was able to control it better with the Diezel. I ran the channel volumes around 10:00 or 11:00 and the master was at 10:00 and it sounded very full and plenty loud. I got a kick ass solo tone by using ch2 with a 4db boost and a midboost (patch I programmed on my multi fx), very articulate and fat. We started to play Sharp Dressed an and our bassplayer said, hey your sound is different, it´s a bit muddy, not a bad thing but your highs seem to be a bid muddy. So I turned up the trebles a notch and voila, the clearity he was missing came back. I had to agree with him, ch4 sounded a tad muddy but it was an easy fix. I finally told them my sound was different because I was using a new amp and they liked it although it is different from the Engl. Our other player said he likes the fact that the Engl has more high end, bit more bite. At this time he´s right, the Diezel sounds very fat and I got to tweak it more to find my sound but so far I´m VERY happy with it. I´m going to take my time tweaking it and then I will record some clips.
So which one do I like best, the Diezel or the Engl? Well, I like them both a lot, I could live with either one of them but tone-wise I like them both equally. I like ch1 and ch4 on the Diezel and I like ch2 & ch3 on the Engl a lot. I don´t think I will ever get ch1 on the Engl as good as the clean on the Diezel but I know I can tweak ch4 on the Engl. Same goes with the Diezel, I´ll probably find even better tones on ch2 and 3 when carefully tweaked. The next couple of days I´ll be playing the Diezel without fx to really tweak it and I´ll write down some nice tones, once that is done, I´ll add the rack again and tweak the rack (set I/O levels etc.). As for know, the Diezel is one hell of an amp, it´s not just for the metal crowd, it can do anything and you can get great grunge, alternative, jazz, rock and even blues tones from this beast.
Finally I´d like to thank 3 guys that helped me in the process of buyng the Diezel. First of all there´s Peter Diezel, all around great guy, always helpful, immediate response to mails and funny as hell, father of this killer amp. Secondly I wanna thank Chris at Beyer´s Music in Bochum for helping me out with the Brunetti/Diezel-deal and for giving me the time to loudly test some great amps. Finally I´d like to thank HC-forumite C-4, he answered a lot of questions and made my mind clear for another test of the Diezel. We exchanged several mails and it seems we have the same ideas about tones and gear. Thank you guys for all the help and insights.
