Zoals beloofd, hier alvast het eerste deel in de Strymon El Capistan vs. echte Tape Delay reeks. Mijn excuses voor het Engels, maar ik voel niet echt de behoefte om alles over te typen en ik neem aan dat iedereen wel Engels kan. Het volgende is direct gekopiëerd van de The Gear Page thread die ik daar heb geopened.

Hey guys,
a guy I know in the Netherlands has scored an El Capistan and we've met before (he bought a pedal at my place a while ago), so I decided to send him a message so I could invite him over with the El Capistan so we could make some clips of it versus some other tape delays. He accepted my invite and will even bring along his DMM XO to A/B vs. my two big box DMMs so we can kill that myth once and for all as well.
I, sadly, don't have the Axe-FX in, so I'll have to resort going straight into the soundcard (PreSonus FirePod) -> Ableton Live -> Guitar Rig 4 -> Twin Reverb models (x2 when stereo is an option). This'll sound fine, though.
I do have to mention that this might be a two or even three parter since some of the tape delays I've got are being repaired at the moment and that means he needs to get to my place several times since I can't see myself having all the delays at my place at the same time.
These will be featured:
- Roland RE-501 Chorus Echo
I had a Space Echo RE-201 but sold it, so this is the closest thing to it at the moment
- Echoplex EP-3
- Echoplex EP-4 (this one is sold, so it won't be used in this comparison anymore)
- Binson EchoRec B2 (still being repaired)
Others:
- Watkins WEM Custom Copicat ('65 tube model - still being repaired)
- Melos EchoMate EM-501 (being repaired)
These other models probably won't be featured since the El Capistan seems to be modeled after the RE-201, EP-3 and Binson EchoRec (it isn't mentioned which model).
Big box DMMs vs. DMM XO vs. Memory Toy:
The DMM XO will be put up against a 90ies reissue DMM and an original 70ies DMM - both blackface ones. A guy I know from Belgium might be dropping by as well and he's taking along a Bluesky Reverb and a Memory Toy. The Toy is probably gonna fall face flat in front of the DMMs, but it's cool to include it. I'll open a different thread for this when that is done.
WET vs. Bluesky Reverb:
The Blue Sky Reverb will be going up against the WET in terms of ambient sounds, seeing which one decays longer and has the nicest sounding decay. I'll open a different thread for this as well when that is done.

This is the first clip / video in the 'Strymon El Capistan vs. Real Tape Delays' series. I don't own an El Capistan myself, but a guy I know, Wouter (WtrPlyr), and I got together to do set up this concept and compare some of the tape delays I have to the El Capistan.
We used the DigiTech JamMan Stereo and recorded a dry loop every time and routed that through the El Capistan and the RE-501 - both of them were in a true bypass looper (RJM Music Effects Gizmo).
You be the own judge of which one you prefer. I, personally, prefer the RE-501, which is one of my favorite tape delays. I prefer its natural modulation (I don't mean the Chorus, to be clear) and its reverbish character. I find the El Capistan to be a little muffled and dark, in comparison. But hey, that's my taste. I still really enjoy it and I might pick one up in the future.

I do have to say that I don't think the El Capistan does the EP-3 sound at all. I was hoping the Low End Contour function would enable me to cut the lows on the repeats so they become brighter, like on the EP-3, but this isn't the case. I wasn't expecting it though, since the EP-3 has a really unique thing going on, in that department.
