Dear music lovers,

I know there are lots of fingerstyle and gypsy swing enthusiasts in the Netherlands, who appreciate guitar music in the tradition of Chet and Merle and Jerry and Django. That's why I would like to point you at a very special event held close to the Dutch border: in the pretty German town of Rietberg from Friday August 14th to Sunday August 16th. It was known as the Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Festival over the past five years, but is just titled the 6th Guitar Festival Rietberg now, because Tommy had other commitments this time.

Nevertheless it features a world class lineup of performers rarely to be seen over here: Merle Travis' son Thom Bresh, current Grammy winner John Jorgenson (with his Gypsy band as well as rockin' the house on electric), Jerry Donahue (with his new Folkrock band Gathering including Clive Bunker of Jethro Tull fame, Ray Jackson and Doug Morter as well as bassist Reggie Worthy), Nashville fingerstyler Richard Smith with his wife and cellist Julie Adams, Joscho Stephan (with his Gypsy Trio, his new Latin jazz combo Magic Rhythm and with Klezmer clarinet player Helmut Eisel), Brooks Robertson (Buster B. Jones' disciple), Petteri Sariola (tapper, slapper, picker from Finland), Flamenco influenced German picker Vicente Patíz and Russian Balalaika virtuoso Alexei Arkhipovskiy.

John Jorgenson appears there exclusively in continental Europe in 2009, Thom Bresh even exclusively in the whole of Europe in 2009, Brooks Robertson makes his first trip over the pond ever - he will be doing a one-hour long Buster B. Jones tribute with the Breshman on Saturday night. There will be lots of concerts as well as workshops by every major performer and also an Open Stage on Sunday morning.

This is as close as you can get to Nashville outside the United States. The people are friendly, the players accessible, the venues and the atmosphere are great. And tickets are rather cheap ranging from 25 to 70 Euros (the latter being the 3-day-ticket) with additional 10 Euros for each 75 minute workshop. Camping is possible at a cheap rate, too.

Rietberg is located in the western part of Germany, just about 2 hours away from places like Enschede, Nijmegen or Eindhoven. Since there are several regular visitors from the Netherlands, I thought others would be interested, too.

The website as well as the ticket system are in German. If you're not familiar with it, I'd recommend contacting the promoter Volker Pappert directly: volker.pappert@stadt-rietberg.de

Don't miss this great festival!
And spread the word!

Regards,

Ingo
