Ik speel de laatste tijd alleen nog maar op mijn Les Paul en kwam er laatst achter dat mijn London City Stratje toch wel een héle tijd uit elkaar ligt.
Ik wil er nieuwe pickups in zetten. De originele singlecoil in de brug is al een tijdje vervangen door een Dimarzio FS-1 en dat bevalt eigenlijk nog steeds uitstekend. Nu de rest nog!
Het gaat dus om de hals en midden pickups. Ze moeten iets warmer zijn en iets meer output hebben dan 'standaard', maar natuurlijk wél de gitaar nog steeds als een Strat laten klinken. Omdat ik erg tevreden ben met de FS-1 viel mijn oog op een andere Dimarzio, de Blue Velvet.
There's something mysterious about the sound of a great old Strat® pickup. It has 60-cycle hum, and magnet-pull can be a problem, but the way notes jump out of the amp and then sustain is so appealing that thousands of players won't do it any other way. We wanted to capture the qualities everyone digs about the originals, but we wanted a few other things, too. Most players use a plain "G" string (regardless of gauge), so we developed a magnet stagger balanced to match today's string sets. We also insulated the coil from the magnets so the pickup can't short out, and the Blue Velvet™ can be safely phase-reversed. Did we lose the original sound? There's no mystery about it: the Blue Velvet™ still sounds great. The Class of '55™ is our pick for clean country sound, but the Blue Velvet™ is our first choice for blues.
Recommended For: All positions, but particularly recommended for neck and middle positions on rosewood fingerboard guitars.
Tech Talk: The 1950s and early '60s produced a wide range of subtly different single-coils. One particular 'flavor' that we really like has a unique tonal balance - very clean and bright bass strings with relatively warm-sounding treble strings. This is what we modeled the DP170 after. Strictly speaking, the calibrated magnet stagger isn't authentic vintage, and neither is the Blue Velvet™s' ability to reverse phase by wiring black hot and white ground, but both of these are important factors that will improve performance for many players.
